So what does edge-split do? say you have a model, and you want some edges to look sharp and others smooth, this modifier works for just such a case this example uses a U.F.O:
The body of the ufo was made by simply extruding a basic circle. What I want is for the surfaces to be smooth, but for wherever the extrusion changes to have a sharp edge.
1. Shade it smooth. Now go to Modifiers (the wrench) and add edge-split.
2. Change the angle (you can click an drag the 30.00 degrees to do this) until you have the result anticipated.
If you just want regular old sharp edges without having to worry about angles, uncheck “edge angle”. You can now select the edges you want and use “Mark Sharp” under Mesh –> Edges in edit mode. That is all for this tutorial. I hope you enjoyed and, as always, feedback is appreciated.
